Notice of Event Cancellation

BERKELEY, California―March 7, 2016―Recently, a branch of the AFSCME public employee union initiated a boycott of all guest speakers planning to address the UC Berkeley community.

Consequently, due to the union’s actions, our planned events with the following speakers have been postponed:

  • Adam Bouska, Co-founder of the NOH8 Campaign (previously announced)
  • Ai-jen Poo, Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance
  • Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD
  • Judith Salerno, President and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure

The Berkeley Forum is an entirely student-run, nonprofit organization that acts independently of the University of California administration. Our mission is to provide a non-partisan, accessible forum for the presentation and debate of a wide range of ideas for Berkeley students, faculty, and staff members, as well as the greater Bay Area community.

The speakers’ boycott is centered around an ongoing dispute between the UC Berkeley administration and university workers. The Berkeley Forum, a completely student-run group, has no authority in this conflict. Furthermore, the Forum is a non-partisan organization and so, as with all campus disputes, does not take a side in this one.

The Forum’s student members have devoted their time to planning this semester’s lineup for the benefit of the campus community. We apologize that these events are unable to take place as planned. Nevertheless, our members will continue to work hard this semester to provide opportunities for our fellow students to be exposed to new, dynamic, and thought-provoking perspectives.
